One of my NRI friends once was referring about the feeling of some latin and western countries people about India; that it is a poor country where monkey, bear and snake charmers are there. I really felt hurt hearing such observations about India but at the same time I thought, though there are absolutely a negligible number of person who professes such practice in India but because of their wide spread documentaries and movies possibly has brought such a dent to the image of a developing country like India.
Once I was traveling in an eastern bound train in India from Delhi when we had some live burning train incident and train tragedies issues. I got scared finding a jam packed 3 tier compartment of that train, wherein a black cobra was being shown publicly open to all the passengers begging money one after another in that compartment by a snake charmer.
I thought possibly the people and the railway authorities are not aware about the danger of such practice showing one of the deadliest poisonous snakes publicly in a train compartment. What will happen if it would strike or slipped from the hands of the charmer? Absolutely there would be a chaos followed by trying to get out from the jam packed running train compartment fearing the black cobra. Black Cobra is even otherwise is declared as an endangered species in India.
I thought possibly because of these types of practice which are still available in India, is the reason why we were being referred to as a nation having monkey, bear and snake charmers.
